Does my steam system need a condonsate receiver at the boiler ? How would I know?

    How long is a string? We would need a lot more information about your system to come up with any kind of answer to that one -- though one can say that, in general, a residential system, properly piped, vented and trapped, does not need one.

    Has someone told you that you need one? Only in some extreme situations would one be needed. It adds some unnecessary complication, and possibilities for a later breakdown, so when it's not needed, it's best to pipe the boiler as a gravity return system.
    Modern boilers are designed to have enough water content to fill all the pipes and radiators. There are other ways of using a non-powered reservoir tank, in the unlikely event more water is needed.--NBC
