A gentleman called the store today needing a new T&P valve to replace the one on a TOYO oil fired WH that was leaking. When I asked for more info he said he would send a photo of the old one, which a "professional" plumber had installed a couple of years ago. This is in a northern Alaskan village. I COULDN'T believe what I saw !!

    @Steamhead,
    What's your favorite saying??

    Apparently the "professional" plumber needs to go back to plumbing school. He also can't read.

    Perhaps he read that the stem needs to be in a vertical position, which it is now.

    Hard to imagine that it is leaking with the pressure holding the disk down to the seat.

    Hello, It's a god thing it leaked! Otherwise... Hope it's OK to save a copy of the picture? it's just too good to forget.

    He says a "Pro" installed it but you can't take everyone at their word. A Pro would know better (I think) and being in an Alaskan village, I wouldn't be surprised if he couldn't get someone out there quickly and with the right part????

    Typical "bush" job. There are some very "interesting" plumbing and heating systems in some of these villages. Most of the time it involves making do with what is available, but at least it is usually put in properly.
    I just finished up a job for a customer who spent three years solid working on these bush jobs, and he would tell me stories of the things you had to do to keep things going. Interesting work for sure.
    If that picture didn't show a dangerous situation, it would be very funny though.

    Professional only means he got paid to install the valve.

    Professional has nothing to do with qualifications, knowledge or ability.

    Had the very same observation a few years ago with a pressure relief valve on a hot water space heating boiler that had been installed by a very reputable mechanical contractor. I turned the boiler off in the dead of winter and called the contractor telling him he needed to get someone there immediately to install the relief valve correctly. The boiler was a "time bomb" waiting to detonate!

    Look on YouTube for the video of the professional boiler installer in Alaska. He does just about everything Dan tells us not to do and he is so proud of his work! I quess there is not alot of competition in Alaska. All the best Jack
