How about a big old Victorian with the boiler room under the adjacent carriage house? A tunnel under the driveway carries the steam mains and returns.

Then we have the central radiator enclosure that was ducted with outside air to heat the main rooms:

The fresh air ducting has been removed and now the room air is recirculated. A temperature controlled fan and switch help:

How about a nice sitting room with a little magic under the seating?

And things just wouldn't be complete with a bread warmer, would they?

Enjoy. I sure did.

Is that another GE downfire I see (amongst all the other awesomeness)?0

I think so @Danny Scully , but I wasn't paying much attention to it with everything else. Plus, I wasn't even there to see this. He has another house across the street that needs a new boiler.
Oh, I forgot:
How about a 5" x 1-1/2" x 4" tee?!
Good luck finding that today...

            Awesome!
Had a similar job years ago. The boiler room in the carriage house was so small it barely had room for the boiler. When the underground piping let go we installed a new boiler in the house. Love that tee!0 -
Wow, tunnels always fascinate me! That indirect radiator is creepy and cool all at the same time. I was noticing the flooring in the sitting room. Ah back when labor was cheap!Serving Northern Maine HVAC & Controls. I burn wood, it smells good!0

It reminds me of The Breakers.

love old houses, very cool!!!!"The bitter taste of a poor install lasts far longer than the JOY of the lowest price"0

I remember when we took the regular tour I think they said something about they didn't want to have to watch coal trucks make deliverys. So they built a tunnel from the side street to the boiler room and built a coal car on rails to transport it to a underground or basement storage room.0

At The Breakers, they moved the boiler room and built the tunnel because the first iteration of the "cottage" was made of wood and it burned down.Retired and loving it.0

Ah.... sure was nice when a few people in most towns had enough money to do stuff like this. Now just 3 people have as much wealth as half the world's population.0
