how do i size chimney liner size , oil boiler 7 inch water heater 4 inch btus or sq inches?

    Square inches is always safer than btus Btus never allow for excess air or dilution air.

    btus is only approved method by NFPA 51, 52,

    NFPA did not approve the btus method, they approved the computer program that created the marginal venting tables. You must go back to the original development of the GAMA Venting Tables in 1988-89. If you read what they say, you might see that area would be safer.

    Jim is correct I however always like to check it both ways. I guess old dogs never change their ways unless they find out that the way they have always done it is not necessarily the correct way. I agree using are is the best way. Many of the installation manuals for conversion burners would give you size based on BTU.
