Replacing an iron Fireman. Stamp says it was made in 1946. Two-Pipe system. Hoffman 8C traps. No main vents, save the vent pipe on the condensate tank. The ends of the two mains each have a 3/4" line running back to a "B & G #40 Heater" (cast into the body), piped to the boiler, below the water line. What the heck IS this thing? Any help would be appreciated.

    Is it a below the water like ??DHW heater. Have any pictures??

    I cannot find the pictures. It was red, about the size of small bread box (turned on end), and had the end-of-main pipes connected to the top. The pipe from the side was piped into the boiler vessel, below the water line. As a total guess, it may have taken a vacuum on the mains, but I don't know how it would have done that.
