I have a hydro-pac 57-36 made by VRV Products of Benton Harbor, MI installed in 2004.Compressor has failed and contractor wants to upgrade to r-410a, but says that the entire attic unit must be replaced. I'm wondering why they cant install a new r-410a compatible coil in the attic unit and new lines and new compressor. I tried to contact manufacturer, but can find nothing on them. I was given no paperwork on these units by the installer back in 2004 when the house was built, so I don't even have owners manual, never mind parts list or install manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Do the complete upgrade. A replacement evaporator coil is probably not available due to minimum SEER ratings required. (A new evap. won't fit in the existing A/H).
Sometimes you can change the TXV, but on a 14 year old system, it will be beneficial to upgrade everything. If you opt for high efficiency (16 SEER or higher), you'll save on electric consumption.0
