HREV/ERV PS installation on return trunk

I have seen some references HRV/ERV PS installation on the return trunk to the air handler and they typically advise some distance between the secondary ducts as in this attachment that specifies 40 inches minimum between the supply and return from the HRV. Any idea why air would be different than the typical closely spaced tees in hydronic P/S piping and what has anyone seen in actual practice?

Maybe because you are dealing with a much less dense fluid operating at very low pressures compared to water??

With the ERV/HRV, you aren't really doing primary/secondary.
You are trying to get rid of some of the stale air and mix fresh air back into the stream.
If you put them closer together, you would let some of the fresh air get sucked back into the exhaust.
