Radiator valve

On a one pipe steam radiator system I understand the concept of either full open or closed, and why it is not recommended to shut the valve because steam may be able to get past the seal since they will end up looking like this. So what is the advantage over just using a 90 and a union?

    well, if you replace the washer, you can turn off the radiator.
    otherwise, there is no difference.

    The advantage with a valve is that you can leave the heat running while removing a radiator for repair/painting/etc..
