It's just surface oxidation. It's fine. Any cast iron will do that when exposed to humidity/wet conditions and has no protective oils/gels on it (which you don't want on boiler block components, other than those that are required for any machining, which already requires skimming))

I don't know anything about stream boilers but I know about metals. Like Fred said, it's just surface rust. A quick once over with a wire ball on a drill will knock that all off.

Thank you very much Fred - helps a ton to hear that....my co-op board asked me if I could find out about this. Thanks again to you and to this incredible forum.

Doesn't matter it would look like that after the first season anyway no matter what you do. All is well.

Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

Thanks Chris, I was wondering if that would be the case.

Here's a shot of the top of my 5 year old block. That was all nice and gray when I put it in.

Once it rusts, in theory that acts as a protective layer to an extent.

@Steamhead ...exactly correct. 1983sf of steam, 1880 EDR, replacing boiler that put out over 4000sf. Going to gas with PowerFlame lo/hi/lo burner.

Hi Dave, yes it is, and yes it will be - have full confidence in ASM - am more than excited about what's about to go down in our boiler room. Without this forum I could never have done this - as in understand and appreciate what they are about to do for us. My question was simply bc the board put me on the spot, asked for more information - it's been a long haul convincing them to do this, and as the board pres. and main instigator it's a lot easier for me, and better for everyone, if everyone in the building is happy. I have no doubt it will be an amazing installation. Can't wait.
