I always forget to take pics of the old system. It was a 4 section American Standard double door. The only main vent was a no name 1/8" radiator vent. EDR came in at 214.
Customer was on a very tight budget so we did the best we could within that constraint.
MST-288 and 2 No 1 vents. We plan on adding additional venting next year at the tune up.
I have no clue how anyone can see water like that and not endorse skimming/cleaning new boilers.

That's what I'd have in my basement now if Burnham wasn't so dead against a gas gun in their wet based boilers.

Yeah it is interesting that they take such a hardline stance on the conversion burners. One can only assume that efficiency with a conversion burner would be light years ahead of an atmospheric.
I have a customer that needs a new steam boiler replaced. She filled out an application for an energy loan. They will finance a gas fired boiler that is 82% but not a Megasteam oil boiler that is 86%.

Agreed, when I taught at Porter&Chester we had a Carlin EZ Gas burner and we'd experiment putting it in a variety of equipment, good experience for the students to do sizing, we'd make up a piping and sizing the orifice scenario like you would doing a gas conversion.

It always ran great, especially the steam, we had a WeilMcLain gold steam boiler, it ran smoother building and keeping a head of steam probably due to the lower flame temps, I think that's their beef, but never saw any issues related to that. The Carlin EZ gas is a great burner IMHO.

The difference in flame temps is less than 7 percent. Their beef appears to lack a rational basis.

As energy efficiency standards get higher, they'll have to go the MegaSteam/power burner route. The Independence is probably maxed out already, efficiency-wise.

    Nice looking install- that's a MST-289, right?

Yes Sir, a 288. A compliment from you means I must be doing something correct. Thanks

We were able to get 84 or 85% out of my EG-40, just not with the drafthood blocked.

I wonder if there's a chance we'll start seeing pin type boilers shipping with barometric dampers running richer in the future.

    Maybe?

I can not remember the specific numbers but I know that after dialing in draft my stack temp was 370* steady state. In the 86% combustion efficiency.

Here's my EG-40's results with the barometric damper, 4" manifold pressure and a brick baffle.

Not sure on that one, my basement runs warm especially if it's warmer outside which it was, but more like 75-80. I assume the analyzer was just near the boiler.

The 99F ambient is clearly an error. It skews the entire result by lowering the net stack temperature and thereby raising the efficiency.

    My point

    Ok.
So skew it properly, assume 80F ambient.

There's a reason we put the T2 probe in the air inlet pipe on sealed combustion appliances. CA efficiency numbers are not reliable regardless.
