Hitting reset

Hi I'm a homeowner and looking for help with my boiler. This is a two year old boiler and just recently started giving me issues. My oil company has been out here five times in the past couple weeks. The last guy that was here changed my burner control out said the new electronic ones are junk and put what appears to be an 8184g4009 on it. It's worse now because when I hit the reset now there is a big puff of smoke with it now, it also seems to run louder than before. I'm not mechanically inept something doesn't sound right with this? Not sure why they can't find the problem. Any advise? Thanks

    It sounds like the igniters are worn out or not lined up correctly.

    I know that town fairly well. It would be a schlep from Baltimore, but if you can't find anyone closer, get in touch.

    Almost all current-model oil burner primaries have some sort of fault code storage built into them. The R8184 series does not, so that alleged "tech" deprived us of some possible clues. I hope you still have the original control, we could power it up and see if it could tell us anything.

    The puff of smoke on start-up might be due to the presence of an oil-delay valve that the R8184 cannot operate properly.

    Thanks for the replies guys I thought that part he put on wouldn't solve the problem, I think I remember that same part on my old unit. He took the other control with him I'm going to demand it back tomorrow. Im also going to ask for my money back on my service contract if it's not fixed this time. I'll keep you in mind I'd they do not fix it and also let you all know how I make out thanks!

    Oh one more question I was reading through the manuals for my oil burner appears that it should be a genisys control on it does that sound right?

    If that's a Beckett burner, it probably came with a GeniSys. You need a special unit to access the fault codes but it can be done. We stock both the control and the access unit.

    Which GeniSys is it supposed to have? The part number might be 7505B, 7505P or similar. Also, what make and model is the boiler?

    It's a burnham mpo 147 and manual says 7505p on it. I hope tech still has my original control to access faults but I'm not getting my hopes up.

    That makes sense. My supposition regarding the oil delay valve is correct, there would not be the need for a -P control if there was no valve. If the fuel unit (where the oil lines connect) says "CleanCut" on it, the valve is part of this unit.

    Not the first time I've seen an oil company do that, and probably won't be the last. They would be in a very bad legal position if the boiler puffed back and sooted up the house.

    If the Boiler is two years old.... If when it was installed Was the oil filter changed ? on install .. I very much doubt control was trouble ... and most points today last longer than two years... the reason I say filter ... I've had this happen .. Company changes out boiler but filter may be 5 years old oil cant get to burner

    @Steamhead

    There must be a timer cord on it right? The burner would never fire without it. The guy probably put one of the 4 seconds cords on. Theoretically it should run fine although that doesn't make it the right thing to do.

    @burnerman

    I see a lot of pump strainers ignored. Had a guy tell me once he doesn't touch them at all unless there is a problem. So he'd do an annual service and wouldn't even check the strainer.

    I would change the filter, check the strainer, and change the nozzle. Clean and properly adjust electrodes. Check cad cell for cleanliness, check spark and oil pressure. Verify Z dimension. Get the old primary reinstalled. That should cover most of the usual problems with oil burners.

    The OEM CleanCuts I've seen have a plain cord without the PD Timer built in. They assume the primary will have a built-in "valve-on delay", or in this case, both "valve-on" and "motor-off" delay. It's up to us to assume nothing.

    Ok so update I called to complain today, basically saying I want it fixed or my money back she said we can send someone out I said no I want it fixed properly this time and I want my old control back, she checked with him and said he threw it away. I said I need to talk to someone now. Put me on the phone with service manager told him everything saying he gave me an outdated control, he said what! Says he will be out there with their best tech with a new control. Came out, went though everything finally finds what they called a cracked porcelain, showed me where the spark was hitting ground. Rewired it back to the way it was with a genisys control and did a combustion test after back together. They seemed to be thorough checking pressures and suction. Hope all is well with the unit now guess time will tell. Maybe the wife can be happy now with hot showers. He talked me into staying with them for now just don't understand why it took so many service calls to find the problem?
