When installing a stop and waste valve, should the bleed valve be pitched for water to drain out or can it be straight in line? Also, can they be installed in the vertical position?

Sorry I didn't see this sooner... The bleed on an s&w (assuming here that you are referring to the standard in-line globe valve type) should be oriented down to drain. The runs should be horizontal -- vertical will leave a pocket of water, which can freeze.

It is essential that it be installed right way round, so that when it is off you can open the waste and it will drain the line! That's what it's for, after all...
