Draft Hood

While checking a job, came across this exhaust connection. Two atmospheric gas fired boilers, manufactured by US Radiator. They both connect into the chimney separetly, but thru this exct assembly.

Does anyone recognize this as a draft hood ? has it been modified?

I've never seen a draft hood that wasn't either integrated into the gas fired appliance or directly connected to the gas fired appliance. Nothing about that looks right to me. Good question.

    Or safe, for that matter.

That could be a draft hood, it's just not shaped like the usual type. The fact that there are two identical devices on two identical boilers would tend to indicate that those things came with the boilers.

Tim McElwain would know for sure- hope he chimes in.

Sorry I should visit more areas here on the site so my answers will not be so late.

Yes that is a draft hood similar to the ones we would also use years ago with Atmospheric upshot conversion burners. In fact I sill have the tin knocker specifications for those.
