    That's an aftermarket safety. If it gets too hot in that position it catches on fire and burns the wiring to the gas valve.

    I'd say that's exactly what it is.
    If it was mine, I'd attempt to clean it using Deoxit D5 several times. If that successfully cleared up the problems I'd go over it again using Deoxit D9 to protect it.

    If that failed, new connector and pins are available at Digikey for the female side. The male side, you obviously need to replace what I assume is a gas valve.

    These are safety matches "Strike On Box"....much less dangerous than strike anywhere matches.....so what is the issue?

    Now are we trying to dry out a box of 12 ga shotgun shells behind the matches also??

    With all of that plastic in there I hope none of that gets hot enough to ignite cardboard?

    What temperature should that roll out switch pop at?

    Geez, I can't believe that you guys don't get the function.

    Its a mountain safety switch. The box holds the Molex connecter in place. If there's a fire, the matches burn, burn up the box, and the Molex connector drops, killing the power to the board.

    Sometimes, some of you just get too far into simplicity. KISS: Keep It Simple but don't be STUPID.

    Safety matches.
    As long as those safety matches are of current production and are in the code book as such, then I see nothing wrong. If they are "strike almost anywhere" matches in there, they would be OK as long as "almost anywhere" includes heating appliance vestibules.

    Now, if they were out of date, or heaven forbid, Unsafety matches, then you all would have something here.

    Absolutely not!!!.

    I regularly check The Wall of Shame at HVAC-talk.com for the entertainment value. It helps to keep up on the many changes in societal evolution in the mechanical trades. The "Darwins" over there are more in line with what a HVAC guy might see. Like using shark bite fittings to connect high and low pressure lines on AC. Or the guy who's outside compressor stops working, a whole bottom side is rusted away, exposing the coil and the aluminum find are eroded away and the copper is exposed, and the owner says that his dog does NOT mark the unit. "So I guess the owner does".

    Most all of us have phones that will take quality digital photos.

    The repair person's intent was good. he should have finished it up with something more permanent.

    As a plumber, I always had some scrap pieces of PVC pipe around in the truck. A well measured piece of pipe, the same height as the match box would make someone look like a true genius.

    A piece of PEX would work as well.
