How could I find a manual, or even an age, for a Sears Roebuck & Co steam boiler model #229 9616?

Sears cannot provide any assistance.

Many were made by Dunkirk, so go to the Dunkirk website, and see if you can recognize your boiler there.

Looking for manual for Sears Roebuck steam boiler

I do not need a part but would like to be more informed. I look at the site you mentioned.

Also very curious if the near piping is correct for the boiler. The exit pipe is not on the top of the boiler but on the side only a few inches above the waterline, which seems incorrect to me.

Maybe your sears boiler was not a rebadged Dunkirk.

Post some pictures here of all the details, including any removable covers off, if you can, and no doubt some of the experts may recognize your model.--NBC

Is your boiler oil or gas?

I didn't have any luck finding a manual but using the numbers you gave kept showing a discontinued boiler. The boiler in this link looks like an old American Standard.

Try posting some pictures of the boiler and near boiler piping.
