Could a probe really pierce a gas line? Our lines into our buildings are all solid black iron.

There was
Already a leak. But the gas worker punctured the line with his probe. Okay how did the fire marshal determine which leak caused the explosion?

Slide hammer probe...
They use a device that is made of hardened steel, about 4' long, 3/8" diameter, pointed on the end and the upper part of made of a larger heavier pipe, and is used like a slide hammer. They don't usually do much more than penetrate the asphalt and put their sniffer in to find gas, or not.
I'm guessing that the original leak was the reason for the explosion, and NOT the service man looking for it. Lucky no one died...
