Let me suggest, however, that a better solution if you have a hot water system is to calculate the heat loss of your building and from that, determine the size of the boiler you need. If you have a steam system, calculate your radiation and from that, determine the size of the boiler you will need.



When I got a new boiler, my old one had a Beckett oil burner in it rated at 70,000 BTU/hour. I could use larger nozzles to increase the firing rate, but never did that. When I calculated the heat loss of my house, I got 30,000 BTU/hour. A 70,000 unit would be over twice the size I needed.



I had to settle for an 80,000 boiler anyway because that was the smallest boiler my installing contractor had to offer of the mod-con type.
