Water from overflow

A friend of mine has a hot water boiler which he noticed the pail under overflow at boiler has about 2 cups of water in it every few days.  He said it is not dripping or leaking.  What would cause this?

    Why was the bucket there to start with?

    Why was the bucket there to start with?

    In my case, I keep a bucket under the blow off pipe just to keep track of whether it discharges or not. Actually, since local code requires the discharge pipe to come within six inches of the floor, it is a cake pan. I wish I were allowed to cut that pipe up so it would end an inch or so above the rim of a bucket.



    I could get a bucket under that pipe now, but by Murphy's law, the bucket would fill up and freeze, and then all hell would break loose.
