Earthquake!

Did anyone else experience the earthquake that hit the eastern seaboard this afternoon?

My helper and I were were putting a multi zone mini-split system  in a cape cod in Staunton, VA. We were on the top floor, three stories up when it hit. The tree company was taking down a large maple about twelve feet from us at the same time. We thought they'd hit the house with the tree the way it shook so bad. It turns out that the epicenter was about 50 miles away in the great metropolis of Mineral, VA.

On the west coast it's amusement

    Oh my!  5.9 shaker!

Glad everyone is okay. There have been geologic theories of massive tectonic  movement out there , so pack your bags folks.

    I'd blame Iceland.

Next time around, grab onto the floor and hang on. (JL)
  • We didn't feel it out here

Maybe it will encourage our fault to slip, not that I'm looking forward to it.  But the longer we wait, the bigger it will be.

I did not feel it here in New Jersey,

I live in New Jersey, near Sandy Hook, Ft. Monmouth, and could see the WTC when it was there. I did not feel the earthquake, but friends of mine here did.

I did hear about it though, and wondered about the nuclear power plant at Oyster Creek very near here (same design ans the ones at Fukushima; around 50 miles away), and the one at Indian Point (NY) not all that far away, and the one at Salem NJ, not all that far either. Three Mile Island was not all that far away either, though further than the first three.

    I missed It

I was driving just South of Staunton on my way to Fairfield when it happened.  When I arrived at the CO-OP in Fairfield the place was abuzz, wondered what was goin on, so I missed the big event of the decade here in Va. My wife works at the hospital in Lexington and she said it shook a fair amount, got everybody excited.  But, no damage detected so far.

    I feel the earth........move.......

under my feet.  I was in my shop in the Philadelphia suburbs....oh it got my attention.  Heard the shop twisting and creaking...felt like someone was shaking the building.  As it started, I looked out the window, thought it was straight line winds, then realized...yikes.  My wife was in a Center City high rise office building, wish sways a little in high winds, and it was rocking.  They bolted down the steps.

I wonder if there's gonna be a  huge run on fradulent earthquake insurance.

    We were in the basement

of Walter Chrysler's old hunting lodge near Cambridge, MD, right on the Choptank River, working on a badly knuckleheaded Webster System. The place is pretty solidly built, but you never know, so we got out of there for a while.

The cell phone network was jammed for a while after the quake, but the landline network stayed pretty clear. Score another one for older technology.
