White-Rodgers thermostat - heat pump mode setting

The White-Rodgers 1F95-1291 thermostat, in heat pump mode, supports two system switch configurations :

1. Cool-Off-Heat-Em-Auto (* factory default)

2. Cool-Off-Heat-Em, Off-Em-Auto

Ultimately I would like the thermostat configured to offer the most versatility for my 3H/1C heat pump system.  Needless to say I'm having a brain fart today deciphering the setting difference.  Care to explain, please?

Thank you.  Dogstar.

    Thermostat switch selection

Thank you, sounds like the factory default switch configuration (Cool-Off-Heat-Em-Auto) is sufficient then.  And you're right, this thermostat supports up to 4H/2C heat pump systems.  Deciphering the installation manual, with my single-stage heat pump (HP1) setup I'll only get 3H/1C settings?

    Stages

You can have 4 stages of heat ,or more than likely you will have 3 stages of heat. H.P. 1st stage, 50% of electric heat for 2nd stage and 50% of electric heat for 3rd stage .
