Old hot water system expansion tank

My old hot water system has a large expansion tank in the attic.  Can I get rid of that? I have noticed that newer systems have smaller tanks next to the boiler. The old tank used to have an overflow pipe off the top that went to a drain.  It is no longer there so there is an open hole in the top of the tank.  The system is working??? Should it be plugged??

    Old Tank

You have an old gravity flow system. Has it had a pump added to it?

Do not plug the tank, you could over-pressurize the system!

Please re-post this on "the main wall" with some pics of your near boiler piping - you'll get more responses there. This section is for domestic (potable) hot water.

Also, a pic of how your radiators are piped would help.

You can choose to do what you want, but you cannot choose the consequences.
