Radiator coinnection leaks

I have replaced an old (c. 1920) coal/oil boiler with a new high efficiency gas boiler. Works beautifully but I now have small leaks from several column radiators where they connect to the valves. Tightening the nut does not completely solve the problem.
One radiator has been an historic problem: when I first disconnected the radiator about twenty years ago I noticed that one of the "dead guys" had sealed the fitting under the nut with some sort of packing. I used new packing and (rarely) had a problem - until now. I've tried graphite valve packing and various plumber's sealing compounds - even waterproof silicone. The water still runs out. Suggestions please.
