WHAT IS THIS VALVE FOR

Hello guys, Can anyone tell me what this valve is for (or was for). It is installed on an old 80+ year old hot water boiler system. It is on the return side of the boiler. I believe the system use to be a gravity system but not sure. This old valve says DELTA 125 on it. It has a plunger that works up and down. The plunger was activated by a unique device that was installed on top of the valve. It had a tank or canister that when heated by an electric element attached to it - heated up a liquid in it and pressed the valve down. I have no idea what it was for or anything. I attached a picture to show it. sorry for all the arrows - i used the pic for something else. The valve is under the yellow arrow on the left side of the picture.
Thanks
Thanks
