Rebate question

I figured gas heating would be the place to try and settle the debate we had in the Garrity shop this morning. When filling out the rebate forms for the utility companies we and everyone else is required to insert the serial number of the boiler not just the model number. Without giving out mine or my fathers ideas as to why both are needed I figured I would see what you guys think is the reason the serial number must be included.

May the conspiracy theorist go for it now.

    Keep the honest people honest?

Maybe to keep from filing false claims?  Easy to file the forms with just a model number and a fake invoice/receipt, harder to come up with an actual serial number I guess.

This of-course is a rather lame idea compared to those who will spin it as a conspiracy, I admit as much.

    Perhaps to

eliminate confusion when a contractor submits papers on installs for say five boilers all the same make and model number, the serial numbers will distinguish the particular claim. Remeber they get thousands of these.

Now there may be a bunch of guys in a back room at the gas company conspiring to defraud all of us. Remember I used to work for a gas company (28 years) so I have inside information on this. In fact THEY have been the same guys in that room smoking cigars for the over 50 years I have been associated with the utilities.

This is why I asked the question here.

Good to have sources with "connections".
