Capping off a Steam Pipe?

Hi,

I recently moved into an old NYC apartment.  The apartment is heated by steam.  Our radiator was giving off entirely too much heat...Not only that it was leaking because it was cracked.  I'll skip the whole part about the property manager not seeming to care and so on...



I decided to disconnect the radiator.  The pipe itself gives off an enormous amount of heat as is and is more then enough.  I bought a pipe cap and screwed it on.  I couldn't get, what i believe is, the radiator valve off the pipe so I just capped the end of that.  Here's the picture -- Is this OK or is it absolutely necessary to remove the valve?

    well, no -- though I've seen worse.  But no, you don't have to take the valve off.  What you've done is fine.



    Wonder how much your superintendent could save if he maintained his system properly?  Sigh...
