Moving radiators

Hello-
We have a one-pipe steam radiator system, built c. 1940. Three of the radiators on the first floor are built into the wall cavity, with just paint and a sheet of plywood between the radiator and the exterior shingles. We want to move them about 6 inches into each room so we can insulate behind them and keep more of the heat inside where we are. Any advice?
Thanks,
M&S

Sounds like a great idea, I assume you will be moving the supply pipe into the room also from below?
If so it dosen`t sound like you`ll be off-setting that much, just make sure you stay full size, 45s where possible, and maintain the slight piping & rad grade back towards the main and you should be OK.

    even if

you don't move the riser coming up, you should be able to do this without much trouble. It will be better, yes, if you can use 45's rather than 90's to make the turns. It is absolutely necessary to maintain the slope of the pipe back towards the boiler, so you will want to raise the radiators about a half inch or so as well, to compensate for the longer run, if you don't move the riser.

If the supply pipes to these rads are accessible below you may get lucky and be able to simply shorten the runouts from the main. It will mean getting the pipes apart-not always an easy job-and then finding someone to cut off the 6" and rethread them.
