Any suggestions for converting steam radiators to hot water?

do not work, Steve, there are injection type fittings which connect into the one tapping available.

Supply and return enter the same side but the suupply injects into a tube down the lower set of sections. Stadler used to market them; I imagine Viega may have picked them up also. If I am not mistaken, Oventropp may have them too.

When Viega marketed them they were part of their Combi system using PEX as the primary distribution back to a manifold. Someone else probably has a better handle on the device than I do.

Brad.

p.s. I have that valve for you ready to go. Just have to get it to the PO. Next week sometime when I am on vacation.

Any easy way to remove the plug?

    Hey guys,
Any advice on converting steam radiators to hot water?Any easy way on getting the tapping out of the other side of the radiator to do so without damaging the radiator? I have never converted a steam radiator before to hot water and these radiators are really decorative and the customer does not want to replace them. The reason why I have to convert some of them is because the customers home is a 2 story colonial with the thermostat controlling the heat on the first floor.........and you know how the rest of that story goes. Anyway, he wants me to zone the first and second floor and he wants to keep the radiators, so I figured I would convert the first floor radiators to hot water and leave the steam to the 2nd floor, unless anybody has another suggestion on how to zone the floors with the steam. All advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    I'm not a pro

(building super) and there are a lot of guys here with a lot more knowledge than I. Having made the mandatory disclaimer...

Is this two pipe or one pipe steam? If it's two pipe, you might consider splitting the feeds to the two floors, and putting a valve controlled by a thermostat on the feed to the first floor. That thermostat should also run the boiler. The thing will probably short cycle if the first floor is off, but it should work. One caution: that valve MUST, repeat MUST be a full port valve! I learned that the hard way... (but the supplier was nice and gave me credit for the reduced port valve anyway...)

  • Why not just put TRVS

on the second floor rads, and avoid all the hassle?

  • Drill a hole big enough to get a sawzall blade in. Cut a small wedge out of the fitting [plug]. The peice you cut out should look like a peice of pizza. Smack the plug with a hammer, so it makes the triangular hole smaller. You should then be able to turn the plug out.
