Steam Pipes banging

I'm not sure what to do. My steam pipes are so loud it sounds like someone is in the basement rapping on the pipes with a hammer.
I've tried replacing the radiator relief valves, but to no avail.
The few plumbers I called don't want to get involved becauise it is a steam system.
Anyone have an explanation as to the cause and a plan on what I can do.
I am in Bellmore, NY
Thanks.

Sounds like water hammer. Can you post some pics of your near-boiler piping? That'll help the chaps to help you.0 -
bang...
and while you're at it: check pressure (under 2 lbs; under one's better) and check the slope of ALL the piping. No dips. Etc.Br. Jamie, osb
