Actually I know the real reason for this. It is because the force exerted on the human body for a conventional belt would cause even more injury. There was a 13 year old kid who actually invented a seat belt that would work but it hasn't caught on because the cost to install these in buses would cost half as much as the bus itself. So in reality they really do care more about money than our kids safety.

Josh...you sound like a REALLY nice kid.........................

Its a good thing you've got "family" here to look after you. You sound exactly like I did when I "went out on my own." Between this and a few other posts I've seen, you really need to heed our advice. This industry has become as real rat race. If I were you, I'd lay back a bit...keep asking alot of questions (as you have been), and take it ALL in. I don't want to see you in the traps we've all been in. Mad Dog

    And they would do that

In town, there were two busses on one street. One picked up a set of kids and the second picked up another set of kids. Seems the families did not get along with each other. When a school board member rode the bus, he of course questioned why do we need two busses. Why not tell the little brats that they do not get to ride anymore.
That school board member did not get reelected.
Where would seat belts fit into this sscene- choke the adults, no more breeding.

You need to develop a good working relationship with

one maybe two suppliers. They will watch your back and vice-versa. As pAh said, that is why he likes Bradford White - me too. We also use a lot of Wolverine Brass valves and fittings - they sell only to trade. Years ago, this trade was very tight-knit in all aspects. It was only about 30 years ago, that the big NYC supply houses would sell to anyone but licensed folks and their workers. It was a lot simpler to operate and turn a profit. It is my belief that one must be very creative and aim for developing a strong protective cocoon -if you will - around your business and connections. BTW, unfortunately, we all have to visit the mega box stores from time to time. Its never a pleasant experience, but a necessary evil. Mad Dog

    Who are

    they, Josh?

And who would put their kid on an unsafe bus?

Look up responsibility, then run for office and change the rules the way you want them after you have all the information.

    One of "they".

We've all suffered at Home Depot

But did you know you can get paid for this?

The HD near my house is particularly bad. For a while they must have been hiring people who couldn't even make it as Baltimore City government employees. They once had a manager who thought 25 people waiting in line for the one open checkout was perfectly fine, and that I had no business complaining about it. So I got on my cell phone to their corporate office. Several days later I got a $25.00 gift card- not bad for less than an hour's work and a few cell phone minutes.

It was a while before I went there again, but the next time there were plenty of checkouts open and a different manager.

    HD

I find service to be a litttle better at Lowes. At one HD near me it is in a inner city area and it has to be the worse HD. I call it Ghetto Depot. All the workers and customers have attitudes. It seems like the workers could be be from the local jail.
One thing I don't like about Lowes is all the announcements they make are in english and spanish. When they page a employee " customer needs assistance in the plumbing dept" Why do they have to do it in spanish? Do they have workers who don't speak english?

= No Auto Parts Available Have you been to Ace Hardware lately? I go frequently because supply houses are 40 miles away (one way) and their prices are now getting competitive with HD.

    What's really sad

is that all you "professionals" keep coming up with highly excused reasons to keep going back. It was an emergency on a Sunday... I was just finisihing a job on a Saturday... Trying to make yourself look good, while bitching about the one place that had what you needed when you needed it.

As long as all you do is piss and moan, while you continue to take your business there, they'll just keep smiling all the way to the bank. Everyone knows they hire teenagers and morons. IF you go back, you're saying "THIS is where I want to spend my money, THIS is the place I want to survive".

    HD

I'm not a contractor, but the last time I went to Home Depot, (which was the LAST time I'll go back) was to bring back the florescent lightbulb that I bought. You see, the glass was broken right where it mated with the fixture end, so one of their bright employees "fixed" it with some orange Home Depot electrical tape, put it back in the box, and put it back on the shelf. I'm sure the bulb filled with air would work wonderfully!!!

I started explaining that to the person who was taking the bulb back, but stopped wasting my breath when I got the blank stare and the "You can just get another one from the shelf and bring it back here." I said, "Nope. I want the money back instead. Someone in this store did this, and I don't want any more merchandise from a store that would try to fix a bulb with electrical tape." Morons.

I have been true to my word. I've not been back since, nor will I.

I use Ace Hardware almost exclusively now.

I bet a customer put tape on the bulb and returned it, not HD worker.

Good call. Ace is a franchise that supplies to local hardware stores owned by local people.

    Your about 95% right Tim........................................

But when one of my customers or my own family needs heat or a working shower AND ACE and all the other Mom and Pops are NOT open....like most Sundays and after 6pm on any night, I'll have to eat my principles. It's not about making myslef "look good" its about service. IF we had a plumbing supply open just till 7pm during the week and a half a day on Sunday, I'd never have to go to HD......but those days are over. Mad Dog

    Amen, MD

For example, if I get a call for a blown water heater on Saturday afternoon, do I tell the customer I can't get a new one till Monday? Of course not! Even if HD is the only place open that has heaters, that customer will have hot water Saturday evening. Period.

Tim, you have to put the customer first.

    I don't think so

The people working in this store all have the same orange tape in their little "tool belts". HD orange. A little too much coincidence there.

    Sundays

That's too bad. The two ACE stores in my area are both open on Sundays.

Heres my 2 cents on HD

When I go to Home Depot, it is not for the service or advice. Those things are just flat out not available.

We all must take Home Depot for what it is, a price and volume leader. Nothing more. The employees are primarily for inventory purposes...eg moving stock, replacing stock, moving displays, etc. Not expert advice.

Although I must say, in the HD closest to my home there is a pretty helpful and knowledgable employee in the electrical area. I'm sure he's completely ragged at the end of his shift. As many of you have probably noticed, a HD employee who is willing to talk, interact and answer questions and at least has some incling as to what they are talking about is typically surrounded by no less than 3 or 4 customers at any given time. In fact, if the employee just knows what isles stuff is kept in, they are surrounded. Just finding things in a HD is work.

you have to give credit where credit is due. They had what you needed when you needed it, so can't be all that bad. My point is that I read the same from building contractors, heating contractors, electrical contractors, et al., and yet they all continue to go to the big box stores. Why? Because as you stated, where else you going to go an a Sunday eve to get that critical item. Then to appear "professional" to their peers, they bash the non-expert parttime employees of such places. I find that type of bashing in poor character.

    MD & SH,

you're right but, you also want that guy/gal there at 6:00 am when you're headed out to the job first thing in the morning. To get people with real product knowlwedge and experience, you have to pay them more than minimum wage and you can't work 'em 14 hour days, and you can't afford to double up on people because its already tough to compete with the BB stores prices. I worked at a national distributor for two and half years. There is a lot of pressure on these guys and a lot of burn out for some
