Scott, Upon Further Review
I just checked our stock on Delta Faucets, first one "Made In Canada", second "Made In Taiwan" What's going on here? They can't make their faucets all in one place? I thought they were manufactured in Ohio?
Wow,

"The World is Flat" is mandatory for anyone who wants to survive the next 10 years in business. The way business is done is changing at a frightening pace in case you haven't noticed. Read the book and get a handle on where things are headed. Or, don't read it, assume you can do business like dad and Grandpa did, and check out the unemployment line in a couple years. The times they are a changin'!
BTW, Go to a car lot and check out the domestic content sticker on a Honda or Toyota. Write the percentage down. Now go and check out a Chevy/Ford/Buick/etc. Write that number down. Now compare the two numbers. You will likely be surprised at which one is foreign and which is domestic.0 -
Are you sure?
What's the difference?0 -
American made castings
We just invested several million dollars upgrading our foundry right here in Boyertown PA which produces Smith and Peerless castings. Come on down and take the tour. Let's face it, A cast iron foundry is a dirty business and there are many obstacles in this country to remaining profitable.0 -
Heck of a way
to represent your company, Ted. Calling potential customers names in such a public forum doesn't make much sense to me.
You sure you want to leave that hanging here?Retired and loving it.0 -
Control
Chinese govt has a heavy hand in it's business' doings. If they bought W-M, it would take all control out of current hands. This way, they control only that aspect of W-M.

Right on Dan, sounds like somebody has been spending too much time listening to Rush. Even bleeding heart liberals need heat, that is until the planet warms up a bit more. But just think; that could solve our dependance on foreign fuel!!! Say maybe those conservatives have a plan after all to save the economy. Maybe I should start switching over to AC, whoops, there goes the fuel. A conundrum indeed.0 -
Correction
Coal is a fossil fuel. I don't think China will bother with increasing oil heat. They need petro for other uses. They see the volitility in the price and distribution issues. They would rather jump to the top of the efficency ladder with solar, nuclear, etc.
In reality, GM, Ford, etc. all claim to be going into China to cash in but the gov will not allow them to make any profit off their people unless the local factory produces the product. Let's face it, WM can't gain market share so they can increase profit with cheaper parts.0 -
Harley Davidson
For all you "American Iron" heads, take a closer look at the casting marks on today's Harley and you will find that many of the parts are not made here.
Buy American, the job you save might be your own.0 -
Thats the problem Chief
There are Very Few companys that are All American.
Harley used to be one of them and you just proved the point.

What did Ted say?
I didn't see any name calling in his post.0 -
You have firmly put your finger on the problem. Not all name calling requires four letter words; and there are many ways to make others look small. Sometimes a second glance is needed.0 -
Hmmm...
... yesterdays wall street journal ran an interesting article re: solar hot water systems in China. It claimed that 60% of the worlds solar hot water systems can now be found in china. Very small systems (for one apartment housing units) cost as little as $140 installed (!!!) over there using the apricius-like solar evac tube technology.
Elsewhere in the journal (and some time ago) analysts claimed that the jump in Chinese oil imports has a lot to do with the degrading electrical situation in China. A lot of manufacturers, etc. are running giant gen-sets to keep producing even as rolling blackouts strike. China is building lots of coal plants, some nukes, this is where they have seem to have made their bet. But until these are online, you can expect a lot of gensets to hum away as well.
As I see it, there is an incredible oportunity in china for heating equipment manufacturers. The Chinese seem to be standardizing around hydronic heat, the question is what will the underlying fuel be. We may yet see the resurgence of interest in small coal-fired boilers that resemble the EU wood-pellet burners.0 -

Jerry,
interesting point about wal-mart paying health care.
Why not make them pay for their employees HO insurance, car ins., LTD ins., whats the difference?
Massachusetts wants to FORCE large companies ( 50+ ) to give heatlth care to their workers. Gee, you think that will make them more competitive. I dont.
Why cant people be responsible for their own health care, stop burdening the employers.
I'm not saying that employers shouldnt offer it, its agreat way to atract and keep good employees, just dont MAKE them.0 -
Make them more competitive? Are you kidding? They have decimated the competition, there is no competition, by reaping spectacular profits on the backs of their employees, with the full support of, well, us, all their competitors have been put out of business. Soon we'll have only two choices, Wal-mart and Home Depot, and all our "savings" on these wonderful discounts will go to prosthetic limbs, (our troops have great health care), and prisons, oh yeah, and lawyers. I'll take good wages and health care anytime, and gladly pay another nickel at the cash register. That's all we're talking about here, a lousy nickel. No new taxes, four more years - hooyah.0 -
China
On the same topic, a local news item: Family hospitalized for lead poisoning from Chinese made glassware that had lead content far above what the U.S Government says is safe. I thought all this Chinese made stuff was all made to U.S. specs and the manufacturing process was closely monitored by inspectors? The propaganda continues....
The future of the U.S. does not look good. But, what the hey, we'll just keep shopping at WalMart and accepting everything but, Made In USA. After all it is cheaper, isn't it? What do we care about our grand children and great- grand children? It costs less NOW!!0 -

Choices
I prefer quality products. It makes my life easier. I also prefer companies that back their products and support their able installers.
It's likely the Chinese will make a large impact on the N. American market with many valve& fttg. manufacturer's already using their foundry services. It will be a matter of time before the quality meets expectations. I don't care where the parts from as long as they are free from defects and made to fine tolerances. US companies using imported product will have to make assurances that the products are defect-free...or else....
I'm not interested in cheap. I'm interested in quality and value. Not to mention rep service when products become problems.

Sorrry Mad Dog, I forget how sensitive folks are, it's just that when someone looks me in the eye at high noon, and tells me it's midnight, and then keeps on doing it, well, trust me, sometimes I get a little mad myself. I'm not sure if it's possible to have an opinion without passing judgement, but I try.0 -
Ron Sorry for the late response
But you are right..... I didn't mean that the O'ring itself was faulty, ( and I have seen the documentary on this tradgidy) but the dissreguard of their operating perameters was pushed aside by the upper directors. (1) one man had seen this possible failure and reported it and nothing was done. So many sucessful launches,,...why bother? Ask the families of the shuttle personel...;-(
