Remove condensate pump?

In another thread, Steamhead (I think) said that condensate pumps are often employed unnecessarily in steam systems. If the piping arrangement is such that a pump isn't needed to return condensate to the boiler, is there some other benefit/rationale for having one? Seems like it's just another item to fail.

    Seriously, if gravity works, I would not mess with it. It is The Law.

    When you need to move condensate to a different elevation than gravity allows, you need a condensate pump.

    If your boiler has low water content compared to system demand, you need a condensate pump, except in that case, it would really be called a "Surge Tank" or a "Boiler Feed Unit".

    As you suggest, if it is not needed it becomes a potential liability over time.
