That tank is a storage tank and requires water to flow through the coil. Cold in, through the coil and into the bottom of the tank. The pump is for recovery when the water is not running. Basicly that tank is giving you a 50 gallon head start on your tankless coil.

I ran into one of these today. I have never installed one & was wondering if any of you have. My question is do you need to feed the tank through the coil? There is a circ on the tank and it reheats through the coil, but can't you feed the tank seperatly so it isn't cooling the coil and firing the boiler all the time? I picked up a sheet on it at the supply house and Super Stor shows it piped only feeding the tank through the coil. It just seems to me you could save some oil by only using the coil to reheat and not cooling it off every time you open a faucet. Thanks, EJW

I understand how it works just fine, I just think feeding the cold water to the tank and only using the coil to reheat makes more sense. EJW

    ok

That being said, you are still going to have to heat x number of gallons of water (whatever you use).
If you were to feed the cold directly into the tank, you will get 50 gallons of hot water+-.
A tankless coil is SUPPOSED to keep up with the demand, but that will vary, so the tank operates as a buffer.
By running the water through the coil first, you are increasing the output of the tank substantially.
No matter how you slice it, you are heating a certain number of POUNDS of water a certain amount.
