Can a two pipe steam system with traps at the radiators be converted to hydronic without incurring enormous cost?

    Nope

And why would you? a steam boiler installed right and maintained right with proper venting is a much more comfortable heat....

    Don't do it!

Not only is the cost high, there is no return on the investment -- a steam system in proper working order is certainly not inferior -- and I think many of us would say it's superior!

Find some qualified people -- they're all over this site -- and get the steam working the way it was meant to work, and enjoy!

    Part One, Part Two

Part one- can it be done? Yes. Part two- without incurring enourmous cost? Probably not.

If the whole system is falling apart that is one thing. But if the piping and radiators are in good shape (and there are 100+ year old system out there to endorse this), I would stick with steam and make it the best it can be.
  • That's probably a Vapor system

which was the Cadillac of heating in the old days and is still one of the best out there today. Preserve yours.
