stuck vent valve

Options
Hi All,

I have oil-fired steam heat in my house. The vent on one of the mains has been periodically sticking open. A little tap will get it to close. Rather than running down to the basement when I hear a loud hiss, I decided to replace it.

Well, I took progressively longer wrenches and I am unable to break the vent or the nipple free. I tried using some "liquid wrench" on the nipple to main connection, to no avail. I hesistate to use a long cheater bar because I don't want to break the main or the nipple or knock the pipes loose from their hangars, etc.

Any tricks of the trade to break loose the old rusted connections?

Thanks! Eric

Heat around the base of the fitting. You want the female threads to expand, and this usually breaks it free. Mapp gas usually gets things hot enough for me...
