    Mongrel?

If that is a mongrel, then I had a customer with it's twin here in MA. The HW "coil" lookes similar to a wound tankless coil, suspended over the center of the combustion chamber. The property owner never saw the need to replace it, regardless of how much I begged. It may still be there...

    There is a damper

on my son's NG furnasty in the row home he just bought in Baltimore (first-time homeowner. I had a licensed and recommended prefessional come check it out. He cleaned the stack pipe, changed the blower belt but not the worn pully, checked operation. No CO test, no gas pressure test and left the damper in. Guess the old man will get to finish that job too when we do windows.

Nice to see you posting GrandPAH

    I remember those beasts

Nice to see you back here Dave!!

Nice save on this one, I have never actually seen one of these "Octopus heaters" in operation. But I have taken apart a lot of them while my dad was out getting materials. Messy, and dusty.....

Hopefully the homeowner will find a way to pay for you to install a safe, comfy system.

I feel for them, especially at this time of year.

    What a find!

I cut my teeth on these when I was young and virile! And complete with the bucket-a-day stove and coil! Was the old Iron Fireman stoker still in the basement? Seriously, I wish I were in the area, I would gladly volunteer to help rip this thing out. At least they used UL 180 rated duct tape!

    what is that thing

in the furnace? I couldn't really see how it came out.but it almost looks like a factory made heat exchanger ... maybe domsetic hot water
  • Those were pretty common

in the old days, just about every supplier marketed one. It was an attempt to get something more out of those old coal-gobbling furnasties.

Dave, please keep us posted on this situation. That HO got screwed big-time.

I don't believe in home inspections

With some of the best heating pros who come to this site most are still learning. Now, take in everything a home inspector has to do, heating, plumbing, electrical, structural. How can one individual be a pro in all these areas? Given all the knowledge necessary I can't see how someone can do more than a cursory inspection. This isn't to slam those who are doing it, I just feel it is an over rated procedure on the part of the buying market. When I bought my house I saved money and did my own. I didn't need to pay someone to tell me the heating system was old, the basement gets water in it and the roof of the garage sags.

    Sounds like

you would make a pretty good home inspector, Leo.

Some people need the reassurance that the huge financial investment they are making has a sound foundation.

Whoever did the one Dave is showing is definetly the bad apple and these poor folks paid the price.
