    A CHALLENGE!

    Ahhh..........

Well my dear dog.....just so happens that the folks I installed this system for are part of a group of folks that are restoring a tavern in the area that dates back to the early 1800's.

Guess what type of heat they would like to have installed?

    Let the game begin.

    Mad Dog, Ed Bratton!

Ed Bratton! He was a customer of mine for years, know him well. He's in retirement (wink wink). One of the great Steam guys who has ever lived.

    Ya know..............

There's a point to be made here and it's very well illustrated in Mr Hunt's pictures.

When 90% of people look at a boiler job like that, all they see is a boiler and some pipe, valves, fittings. Doesn't look like it amounts to a hill of beans for sure. They can't tell if the thing is piped right or wrong, sized correctly or not etc, etc.

When those of us who are in this trade up to our eyeballs look at Hunt's piping job, we see a well thought out design that will bring years and years if not many decades of reliable troublefree heat.

The point is that this is precisely why many people balk at prices. They don't understand that it's not "just pipes". It's a collection of properly sized and correctly installed material that when assembled as it should be, now comprises a SYSTEM!. Put one thing in wrong or use an incorrect size and the whole system breaks down, performance and economy suffer or it maybe flat out won't work at all.

They fail to understand that they are not purchasing piping, boilers and fittings. The skill and knowledge of the installer are of paramount importance to the overall performance of the system. That's the KEY issue and it goes completely against the grain of our turn everything into a commodity and dumb it down society. Most people just can't get a handle on the fact that it's more about the installer and his work than it is the equipment. THAT is what you pay for.

    And there it is

that thing that seperates the die hards from the weekend warriors and the fools that rush in where Angels fear to tread.

All of those parts are readily available at any big box and the boiler can be purchased on line. Buy them all, stack them in the basement and wait for them to magically "self assemble" the right way.

We didn't invent the physics, we just understand it. THAT is what makes us different from the rest.

And there is a fee for that.

Flying to Chicago in a few hours. I hope to see some familiar faces and meet a few new ones.

BTW, the owner of that new steam system wants to take pics when he gets things in order there in the basement.

He and his wife are happy as clams with their "new" old steam system.

    Night all!

Great Job, well layed out and clean. Man are you sure you used dope ? I can't see it on most of the threads. Nice and neat.

    Darin taught you well :)

So .... the new guy does the work and you go for coffee and talk to the customers ... right ?

How did your arms and chest feel after this job. Nothing like pulling some 24's to tighten up the chest muscles.

    Great Job Mark.

    Hadn't seen that one yet

Nice article that makes you think where this trade has been (craftsmanship) and where it's going (to scary to contemplate).

You have to do something about the ranting from that guy in Michigan though. ;)
