The world's youngest steam system
Amazing job on the steam system.
If I were to make one critique, the oil line. If it was a little more under control it would complete the package.
A couple of nice tight expansion loops neatly tucked beside the boiler, and the line covered in concrete to prevent crush damage (better yet chicled into the floor and concrtet flush)
You have my admiration for this job. It looks great!

Here are
a few pics of a brand new steam system.
Customer found us here on The Wall.
They bought an old home that had steam in it once, but someone removed it years ago and replaced it with FHA (only the first floor had ducting)
Most of the rads were still there, but all of the piping had been removed.
We put it back.
Should fire it up today but it will take some time to get it clean. Rhomar Hydro-solve to the rescue!
Pressure-trol replaced with a vapor-stat. Gorton #2's at both ends.

You , Mad Dog, and Steamhead...
are in a very exclusive club! Great looking job, bet they'll be toasty when the snow starts falling up there...week after next?!?!?!0 -
Now that's a STEAM JOB !
How many section V8 is that ? Was the 2nd boiler riser optional ? If it was and you twinned it in anyway , that sets you far apart from the pack . Along with the looooooong height of the boiler risers , the big drop in the header , and what is that ? A 3 by 2 by 2 tee ? Or is it 2 1/2 ? Where on Earth did you find that ?
Ok , who's idea was it to restore the system back to steam ? What a great thing to see in this day and age . I'm envious , buddy .0 -

Gee, why didn't you use copper? It's faster, but I guess it isn't cheaper anymore.

I can see Hunt's head swelling up now..........
He's probably walking around.... struting...maybe a better word, feeling like he's a man among boys because of that job. His chest is all puffed out and he keeps flexing his forearms whenever he thinks someone is watching.......all the while he's grinning like the cat that ate the canary.
And rightfully so!!
Tis a sad but true statement to say that 80% of the people in the heating trades today wouldn't even know what they were looking at if they saw that piping arrangement. It would be a "What the-----" moment.
Now the other thing is........Darin told me privately that he actually did ALL the work in their company whilst Hunt chatted with the homeowner, ran for parts and procured coffee and doughnuts and such. NOW we can see that this is a malicious rumor on Darin's part meant to discredit Mr Hunt who, it appears, actually does work.......on occasion.
All that being said.....Nice job Mark!!!

steam boiler re birth
Great looking job. Tim0 -
Bizy week
That is a Burnham V-84 and I did not have to use both taps but it is recommended by Burnham.
I had enough room to skip the drop header but figured, "What the heck".
It was the customer's wish to restore the steam system since they bought the house precisely because it is old. The radiators were there(most of them)and they love the way they look. We were happy to oblige.
Thanks Ron!

Mark
In all sincerity, that really is a nice job. Look's like you're survivin' so far without Darrin. Keepin' him and you in my prayers.0 -
great job !
Hi Mark,
Great job on satisfying the customer. They wanted steam, and you gave it to them. That start-up will be exciting. Keep the water clean, and the waterline steady.
Best regards, Pat0 -
Thanks Pat
I plan on revisiting this system several more times as the heating season progresses to clean things up.
I flooded the near boiler piping all the way to the drop header with Rhomar Hydro-Solve added. Got it hot and let the Rhomar do it's stuff. Kind of like the directions on a shampoo bottle, "Lather, Rinse, Repeat"...
I had the entire system filled with steam on Monday and watched the boiler cycle on pressure. Just rying to work some of the oil back to the boiler. The waterline held steady after the initial cleaning, but that won't last once the oils start coming back. As I said, I planned on several return trips.
Thanks for your kind words.

I am counting on you to take up some of the slack when it comes to keeping me laughing. Darin and I are BRUTAL to each other when we work together, hunt together and even here on The Wall.
I'll be at ISH this week. If you are gong to be there, lets get together for a "sip" of adult beverage.
Thanks again Steve. The Prayers are GREATLY appreciated.

You just trumped me...........................................
I wanted to take the title of THE LAST MAN IN AMERICA TO INSTALL STEAM HEAT from Ed Bratton , Hudson New York. It was nice to wear the title belt for the last few years, but you boys earned it, Great job, hope you enjoyed doing it. Mad Dog

Mad Dog!!
You will likely go down in history as the "First Last Man to Install Steam Heat". Sort of an emeritus position if you choose to accept it
"Let the word go forth.... that the torch has been passed.... to a new generation....."
Or to further paraphrase JFK:
"We do not do steam heat because it is easy.... but because it is Hahhhd..."
Brad0 -
That better not be
"oil-based" pipe dope I see on all that beautiful pipe-work - is it?
You using TSP to clean her out lad?0 -
Actually
it was Rick Mandel and I who succeeded Ed Bratton when we did the new steam system for his daughter and son-in-law, about 7 years ago I believe. That system was featured in Plumbing & Mechanical magazine. Then came Mad Dog, then Dan Foley, then someone in Ohio I think, have to look that up when I get home. Now Mark has joined the club.
Who will be next?
"Steamhead"

Well
in all honesty, this is not the first complete system I have done.
Back in the mid 90's I did a complete re-pipe of a church from the boiler room (including a new W-M LGB-13) all the way to every radiator.
Not sure why they had us tear out all of the piping as it was still in great shape after nearly 100 years.
I do not have pics of that job anymore.

Hey don't forget us! It may not have been a new system for the house but we installed a new boiler and put steam in a 1,500 square foot two story addition!
