New Boiler

Hot Rod nailed it.

You have to understand that while the brand of boiler makes some difference, what you really want to shop for is your contractors ability to select the correct boiler for your system and then integrate it with what already exists. Sometimes, depending on your heating system, you will have the opportunity to drastically reduce your energy costs due to efficiencies gained by a different control setup or the ability to use reduced water temerature.

Lower water temps utilitzed by an outdoor reset control system may make it possible to use a condensing or "high efficiency" boiler. These require correct piping layouts in order to function properly and are more expensive than a standard boiler, but can reduce your energy costs by at least 20% over a standard boiler and control setup. I have homes/buildings that have hit nearly 50% savings with these.

The point being.....your number 1 priority is to find the right contractor. He'll be able to match your budget, your heating load and your system with a boiler that will do the job.

As far as brands, my first two choices are Viessmann and Buderus and they have nicely integrated controls that do a host of things that help economy and comfort. They make boilers that will "fit" any system and are of very high quality. Munchkin is a decent condensing boiler and some have had good results with the Weil McClain Ultra. Burnham is also a good boiler.

Hope this helps.

BTW, trust me when I say that over the next 20 years. initial cost will pale compared to efficiency of operatioin. Go for the most efficient boiler you can get, You won't be sorry!

    New Boiler

Hi. We are currently getting quotes for a new heating boiler in our house. The house has 4400 square feet to heat, and we want somthing more efficient. Does any one have any reccomendations as to what would be the best residential hydronic heating boiler as a replacement? I am just looking for brand names. Currently, we have a 1954 U.S. Radiator unit.

    boiler brands

Viessmann and Buderus are great brands there is also burnham hydrotherm Coneamatic munchkin trinity baxi monoter ( sorry if I missed anyone) , but look at the method of heat delivery to the home. if you are looking at changeing the boiler only stay with the cast iron systems the condensing boilers wont run most of the year in there energy saving mode to give you the saving your looking for , look at the control stratagy instead.add a control that will change the boiler temp to meet the outside changes to suppliment domestic hot water look at adding solar to the home . but talk to the local guy as there the people who have to service the system and parts can become an issue depending on location

I guess what I am asking is what is the best brand that is most economical? Also, we will be ditching the seperate gas fired water heater, and installing an indirect unit.

    Buderus

My opinion: You cant go wrong with a Buderus. Good price and high quality.

    The economics

will come from having a good room by room heat loss calc done and a system designed to this data. Shop for a contractor that will provide this and options on control and piping.

Shop for a brand that is common in your area and has the support and emergency repair parts available.

I can't think of any "bad" boiler brands. Plenty of misapplied, mis sized, and less than perfect installations around, however :) This makes even the top drawer brands a poor investment.
