Chinese International Heating Expo
CIHE - Beijing
About the size of ISH North America.
Mostly stuff you never see in Frankfurt or North America. Almost all Asian heating products with exceptions of A.O.Smith, Weil McLain, Utica, Danfoss. Tons of Runtal type stuff, less than half the cost of Runtal and as nice or even nicer!

Not to put a damper on the honeymoon
But I hope we exclude any Chineese manufacturers @ ISH since they exclude any foreign competition in their country. Glad to see they're going to kill the European economy along with the US with unfair trade policies.0 -
The very essence of
capitalism is free enterprise and competition.
Either you're an American or your not.
Not to burst your bubble, but A.O.Smith, Weil McLain and Dunkirk/Utica are all here!
If you're not sure of your facts, perhaps you should lighten up until you are...

Had dinner at
Durty Mollies' tonight. Coldest Guinness I've had since Dublin. Great meal. Irish stew, and Sheprad's pie to die for.

As usual,

One of my brothers spent a few weeks in Beijing working for Intel and he had a great experience.
As Scotty said, keep those pictures coming and enjoy the ride.

China
You do know that China uses child and slave labor, sweatshops and the like. They don't have to worry about EPA, IRS, OSHA, liability insurance, liability lawsuits, ambulance chasing lawyers, unions, healthcare, or any of the rest of the myriad of things the U.S. businesses are saddled with on a daily basis. They are also still a totalitarian communist dictatorship that is just biding time before they blow through Asia and the South Pacific like Hitler through Europe. They have made no secret of the fact they consider Taiwan a renegade province and will reclaim it by force. They also have not forgiven nor forgotten Japanese atrocities in the 30's and 40's, so they are on their hitlist. At over a billion people, they have alot of mouths to feed, so the agriculture areas such as New Zealand, New Guinea and Australia are enticing. We spent billions of dollars and over 130,000 lives in Korea and Viet Nam (some in my own family) fighting to keep the world free from communisim and now we are kissing their commie backsides. Unfortunately, when we do get into a shooting war with them, we will lose as we do not have the industrial capacity that we had during WWII (China now does). Also, don't expect NATO to get involved in our fight as the have their own agenda. We're on our own. We paid for and financed one way or another China's industrial success just as we and Europe paid and financed Nazi Germany. Then as now we are giving our enemies the weapons to kill us. Oh, by the way, did I mention that the consumer goods China does make is junk? That is one list we have not enough room for.0 -
And did you know
23-million of them died helping us beat the Japanese in WWII? Or does that count for nothing in your warped sense of history and your pompus assertions?
How short our memory is when making an obtuse point...
Your righteous indignation notwithstanding, take a look around at the homeless shelters and abortion mills of the US before casting those stones of righteousness.
I make no apologies for China's abuses; and there are many, but they are aware of many shortcomings and are attempting to rectify the problems from within.
Perhaps we could step back and assume they may work it out without your grandstanding?

Ken you hang in there and dont worry about politics....
Human beings are human beings no matter where we are in the world...the depth of a mans intellect and spirit goes much deeper than his skin. all of us have put up with our fair share of government Laws rules and regulations and all matter of propaganda and still the human spirit can and does continue to strive for the world at peace. some day i will tell you a story about the "Unbendable Wu"...."the sun comes up,i draw water from the well, feed the sheep...the sun goes down...Who Is the Emperor to ME?"0 -
good as Ron Jr's
but they had a bit more room to do it...I give Ron the advantage if that had to be in a closet..:}0 -
Wow!!
Great travelogue, Ken. I'm living vicariously through your trip! I'm sure you'll have some interesting perspectives to share at Wetstock. Thanks for sharing. The Chinese are posed to become a great Eastern power. We can see from the current price of commodities, what it will mean in the US. Looking forward to your safe return (and a beer at Wetstock)

been there, done that
I was in Bejing last Oct and in Shanghi and Nanjing a year ago last spring and have found the Chinese people to be a very gracious, polite and accomidating people. In the major cities all the high school age and college are learning english and love to come up to you and "practice" their english. Went to Tinamin at night, you can go almost anywhere pretty safely, and got invited to a traditional tea ceremony twice that night. All the plumbing fixtures are Kohler, American Standard or Toto and most of the self contained cooling units I saw, these are free standing selfcontained units, are either sanyo or Toshiba. The "squat toilets" which look like little urinals on there backs are a hoot, but I still prefer the traditional wc, which are very common at the hotels and larger resturants which do cater quite a bit to westerners. The local food is fabulous as long as you stay to the larger resturants, and if you don't like chinese food, there is a McDonalds, or Pizza Hut or KFC or something similar about every ten blocks in any direction you go. If you guys think ny cabbies are something, just ride with those chinese cabbies, I don't think you can get a piece of paper between the cars they are so close but I never saw an accident or even any dinged up cars. I could go on for an hr or more. Just let me say if you ever get the chance to go there, it can be a really great time. My whole trip for ten days, including air, 4 star hotel and two meals a day was 2600.00 and with an exchange rate of 8 to 1 stuff is real cheap for practically anything you are looking for, just remember ya gotta bargain. China is the up and coming powerhouse economicaly and we had better get used to it, and you would be amazed at how free the money flows over there. nuff said0 -
looks
like he's going for a gun. How were the people? Friendly, nice, hate us like most of the world? Great photos,Dave0 -
Now that's something
Having my work compared to the Great Wall . I'm humbled . Ken , is there going to be a video of your keynote speech ? And if there is , can we get some dubs ? China looks like a fascinating place , hope you're having the time of your lives Ken and Jaye .0 -
and what changes those things?
being a country with something to lose, and having citizens with something to lose.
Allowing china to compete is what will change all those horrible things. Unless, of course, you'd rather we invade to remove their threat before we can't do it anymore.
They can take agricultural regions, we'll take the oil I guess, and then we can trade each other for what we need, sweet!

China
Well, Ken- In case you didn't know the Chinese government was not communist at the time of WWII. The commies under Mao did provide limited assistance, but did it with an ulterior motive. That is they used the arms we gave them to drive Chaing and the rest of the non-communists to Taiwan, and the ones who couldn't make the trip were slaughtered or put in re-education camps. I guess you missed the part where Mao said he would spread the revolution across the world, including the US. You can be sure the USA would not have the standard of living if we were communists. But, perhaps you do know that. As far as abortions in the US, (they are favored by the leftists amoung us) Yes we do, tragically, but China has a government mandated abortion policy to control population. We have homeless. Many of them were in institutions until the left said "we can't have these people in institutions! It's inhuman! They will be much better off if we throw them out into the street!" Some solution. What are you doing to alleviate the homeless problem in your country? As far as the 23 million Chinese killed helping us, most were slaughtered by the Japanese before we entered the war. How about China's puppet North Korea? You can be sure China has much more leverage over North Korea in the current nuke crises than they admit to. I am not grandstanding, just facing reality in the harsh light of history (I was a history major in college- 4.0 average). If you think for one minute the Chinese will allow Taiwan and the surrounding areas to live in peace free of China's heavy thumb, I have some land in Florida to sell you. During the recent tsunami diaster, the US gave billions, China- Zero. Even though they have the most dynamic industrial economy in the world today. The Cultural Revolution, Tiannemen Square, Etc., etc. You say you won't make apologies for the Chinese, so don't.0 -

pretty much the same thing that happens when we decide we know what's best for another country, they get screwed by a larger power looking out for its own interests. What do you think will happen if Venezuala decided not to sell us 20% of our oil anymore? You think we'd take our ball and go home?
Whether a government is communist or not doesn't concern me. Freedom means being able to try different forms of economic structure. All that concerns me is the level of corruption and oppression in a government. China's is bad, but getting better as they become a real power with real economic prospects. Capitalism is occurring and will continue to change their country. It's the only thing that ever has made a difference and it should be encouraged, not discouraged.
It's not a cureall though, as a citizen of the country with the highest per capita incarceration ratio in the industrialized world (me) can tell you.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that many of those sweatshops are run by American companies that are making huge profits selling their products to Americans who care more about low prices than expolited Chinese children. And it was not that long ago that there were children working in American mines, mills, and factories. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.0 -

One of our main problems is that we have stuck our nose into the internal affairs of too many countries around the world. That is the reason why the homefront has been neglected. I hear China's sabre-rattling on a daily basis and am concerned with my grandchildren and great-grandchildren dealing with a communist society that does not allow dissent and is now a industrial super power like we were and has a 3 million man army. This is something to be concerned about. Thanks for listening.0 -
I just got back two hours ago.
If my jet-lag subsides by mid-week, I'll post a few notes, answer some questions, and share the inside tracks from our poerspective.
Thanks for the support, comments and above all, for teaching me much of what I know about hydronic heating...
