Pressuretrol on a hot water system?

Inspected a house yesterday with an old forced hot water boiler. Gas fired, 2 zone, in a 57 year old cape. While checking the piping and controls I look up to see a pressuretrol mounted on the piping... Was this ever a common practice or is there any situation where this could be appropriate? Everything worked OK. It reached temperature and shut down the burner, circ pump kept running till heat call was satisfied... Maybe some deadman's juryrigged inovative pressure safety? Thanks in advance for your help...

pressuretrol
I have seen them installed and used as safety, tied to some sort of alarm (light or sound) in case of a pressure drop in the system , or in line to the burner, kind of like an early low water cut-off. Was it still wired in and funcitoning????
