I have a 4 + year old 199 out there
I had to change the blower motor on that. I have never had to replace a heat exchanger or had one soot up. For annual maintenance I clean them using CLR and brush the sections with a nylon bristle brush and flush it all out with water out of a sprayer bottle. You MUST set up the burner with a digital combustion analyzer for proper operation. If you have any questions, the factory techs are always more than happy to help you.

And we see
the effects of the Midwest coal power here in Maine. Some days in the summer your eyes sting from the pollution in Acadia National Park . But they tell me that the "Clear Skys" initiative will fix that and I will grow hair.
Here is the haze can site.

Hey, the Vitosol tubes are great...
... but they are a private-labeled product made by Thermomax. One wallie here has installed the Thermomax tubes extensively and is very happy both with the product and the company making it. Also check out Butler solar for a number of well-thought out solutions.
I chose the Vitosol 300's simply because Viessmann could give my contractor a near-plug-and-play solution. This is my contractors first solar installation, so my emphasis was on making it as foolproof for him as possible. However, I am sure that I could have saved a bundle if I had let Thermomax/Butler design the system and used their tank with a dual HX instead of a Vitocell B300.
Thus, the decision to go Vitosol 300 was clearly not made on initial purchase price but the expectation that the marginal Δ would be made up by product support if something went wrong. Furthermore, I didn't do it because I'll save that much money by heating my water 75% of the time with solar heat... 'cause it doesn't cost that much to heat water.
However, I'm an engineer, and as such, cannot refrain from trying to justify neat products, no matter how far out the economic benefit is. For example, I like the thought of allowing my boiler to take the summer off (we're only using the Vitosol for DHW heating) and I believe there is some marginal benefit to that for the boiler that is hard to quantify.
I would have your contractor download the technical specs re: Vitosol installations to better understand how to site, orient them. Due to historic considerations, we had little to no leeway WRT angle, azimuth, etc. Instead, we simply make them get as flat to the roof as possible and hope for the best. Since the tubes are within 10° of being at the same angle as our latitude, the solar literature I've read states that we'll be OK.0 -
I love your writing mark...
I wish I could attend your classes in Colorado.
Do you have any textbooks you've written? Kevin
