steam vacuum

Hey guys,
In this area there is very little steam heat. I may see one a year. What would make a steam boiler fall in to a vacuum? I had one the other day that was in a vacuum and when I opened the blow down valve air rushed in and the system settled.
Thanks,
Dave

    Zone valves

If someone added zone valves to the system that could do it.

What type of steam system is it?

    vents

how are the main vents? If they (or it!) are bad, that could do it too... also, I've heard that some main vents if they get too hot will not open on vacuum; they should be far enough from the return (if you have them on the return!) that steam can't hit them...

On the other hand, some vapour systems are designed and intended to pull a slight vacuum. Could it be that?
