Is stainless steel code for gas in NY? Try to find out what the exact code for this application is first and then for $6,500 I would get a few est.'s on this. Bring someone in that could also advise you on weather a power vent is an option for your boiler if the liner cost doesn't fit your budget.

Chimney Re-lining
Hi all. We just had a chimney sweep look at our chimney and found that the last 10 ft or so of the liner was never replaced when the top portion was. So half of the clay liner is good and the rest is terrible. He told us he would have to remove all the old liner to install a stainless steel liner for $6500. We realize how important this is. We have a gas burning boiler that is vented to this chimney. We are in Brooklyn NY.Does this seem reasonable,(the price) and does all the clay liner need to be removed?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated

well
I don't do chimney's for a living but it would only make sense that the tile be removed. If he were to run the new vent down through and then have the clay collapse and crush it you would be out double. I would however get another estimate. I, however, check with people to find out a little about the person or company doing the work...May be more expensive for some but you want the best to take care of something so important!!0 -
Chimney
I'm not sure about NY but in PA stainless is code. As far as price, get another reputable estimate and opinion. Check the BBB for references as well as the local consumer advocate.0 -
please post
the height of your chimney, along with the (load) total appliance Btu,s.
I do not know the codes in NY but in VA you can reline a chimney with alum. for Nat. or LP gas.
As for the money I has a chimney sweep pull a 7" stainless steel insulated liner 35 feet, and rebuild the brick crown of a chimney for alot less then your quote. But remember every job is differant. Best Wishes J.Lockard0 -
Chimney Line
Thanks to everyone for their quick responses!!
The boiler is Natural gas and I would guess the height of the chimney is at least 40'. The DOE Heating capacity is 173 MBH.We are going to get 2 more estimates. The estimate seemed high to us as well.
I just assumed my only other option besides clay was stainless steel. I had no idea that aluminum might be an option.0 -
All,
We had a new chimney guy come in and install a 5.5" stainless liner for $2000. When I told the new guy the $6500 estimate he told me that that was a big rip off.
And the liner is lifetime guaranteed and they come back to inspect after 1 year and will fix any problems free of charge. Advanced Chimney in LI are the guys we used and they were quick, extremely courteous, reasonably priced and cleaned everthing up. Thanks to all for your help0
