My first was Princess who was a Collie/Shepard mix and followed my brother home from school. She was with us for fourteen years. Sweetest dog you ever met. We did'nt know where she was one afternoon. A silver caddilac pulled up to the house and the back door opened. Out came Princess and the car drove away.

The other was Ruby my wifes and mine dog. She was a fox hound and the most beautifull dog. We put her to sleep about two years ago and it still kills us. Maybe I can scan a photo.

They are great animals.

Scott

    You all probably already know...

In no particular order...Labrador Retriever(black, yellow or chocolate), Golden Retriever, Red Doberman Pincher, German Short-Haired Pointer, Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog. All fur-faced, sad-eyed tail-waggers are great, though.

as Steve Ircall (SP) would say

    "Did I do thaaaaaaaaaaaaat"
    Dont get me started.
I have only had the honor of sharing the life of one,a yellow lab. He was a wonderful companion. The stories are endless, how he would jerk my arm off walking him on a leash, but as soon as I would hand the leash to my young niece or nephew he would draw back & it would sag. Or how one day a month or so before we lost him, (now mind you he had quit climbing the stairs a year to a year & a half prior to this)I came home & could not find him, after a small search I located him down the basement, he had lost control of his bowels but made the effort to not mess in the house went down the stairs but could not get back up.
My wife & I laid with him on the floor the last night of his life, he was basically unable to move & we were taking him to the vet in the morning, around 3 am after not moving all night just as he drew his last breath he took his head and nudged me twice, and then he was gone,,,,,,,,,,He was ready,,,,,,,,,,I'm still not

    One that doesn't....

...bark when someone comes to the door with me standing right there.

    One that doesn't shed.

One that doesn't "go" all over the lawn (just pick one spot, will you!).

    One that doesn't stink.

One that doesn't sleep on my bed when I'm not home (and does bark when someone comes to the door).

One that isn't afraid of thunder.

One that doesn't try to bite the wheels on the wheel barrow when we do our gardening.

One that doesn't attack the hose when the sprinkler is on.

One that puts its toys away, and not leave them all over the house.

One that doesn't give me a sad look as I try to enjoy my dinner.

One that doesn't take a drink and then slobers all over the kitchen floor.

That's my shadow, my black GSD. She's ten years old and in good health, but I will miss her terribly when her day comes.

The American [Pit] Bull Terrier. And no, they're not inherently mean, and yes, they're great with kids. Think "Little Rascals".

Aside to "Doc Radiant". They generally have all of the qualities you mentioned, except they rarely if ever bark. They do though give strangers a look that kind of says, "You know better..." Some are extremely fond of water and will swim against the current for a LONG time.

My all time favorite was a mutt who followed me home

He was a poodle/terrier mix and we called him Peppy. The name was short for Pepsident. My daughter named him that because he had a pronounced underbite and his bottom teeth were always in view. He looked like he had a smile all the time. He is long gone now, but he was a loveable mutt and I think of him often with fond memory.

We are currently going through the tough decision to put our 14 year old cocker to sleep. His hind quarters have become paralyzed and he has no use of his back legs. It happened over night. He does not seem to be in any pain, but taking him outside is wearing my lady and I out. His heart is strong and he could probablly live in this condition for some time to come. It is a tough decision for both of us as he has been one of the family for so long.

    Boxer

    Hi,
I have a beautiful male Boxer, "Ozzie" is fawn with floppy ears. He is strong enough to rip someone's leg off but is friendly as all creation. Boxer's are exuberant and always have a puppy mindset, all you have to do is get used to the farting and the slobber!!!

    Best four legged buddy

Our English Springer Spaniel "Oliver". He loves people and does not have a mean bone in his body. He weights 80 lbs. and he still thinks he is a lap dog. He is my constant shadow and thinks he is human, what a character...

... for English Springer Spaniels. I thought I was going to hunt pheasants and quail. They soon became my wifes house pets.

We got Jamie the year we bought our house 17 yrs ago. She died at almost 15. We have her daughter Abbie who is 14 and is almost deaf but still full of energy . We got Duke 2 years ago to keep Abbie company. He is a 9 yr old male. We got him from the Springer rescue league and can't understand why his former owners would ever let go of a dog as nice as him.

I think people don't do enough research when they get an English Springer Spaniel. They require some room to burn up some of their excess energy. Oliver when he gets out in the morning, runs around the house, every day, at about 600 miles per hour for 15 - 20 laps. I expect him to drop dead but he has energy to spare for he is just 18 months old. Our village has a leash law, and Oliver just begs anyone who walks by to come and pet him or scratch his ears, but his big mouthful of teeth scares them until I explain that it is his big smile and he is harmless. Now everyone stops and gives him a little attention and he is then in his glory. He is a character......and we love him.

    Gotta disagree Mike.

They may not be born inherently mean, but it is right under the surface - ready to rear its ugly head. Any breed can be dangerous, and no breed has been more inbred for ferocity and viciousness. Saint Bernards, German Shepards, Rottweilers and Dobies were the "Bad Dogs" of the sixties and seventies until the Inner city pitbull began to make a name for himself. Any dog especially larger breeds can do significant damage and kill a child or elderly person singlehandedly. What makes the "pit Bull" aka Staffordshire, American Staff, et cetera SO dangerous is that THEY DON"T KNOW WHEN TO STOP...they will maul another animal or child until they are dead. No doubt thet are great warriors, but I would never have one as as pet. Most other breeds will attack and then hold a victim in a submissive position for a short time - until the "threat" is under control. The "pit Bull" will rip and maul until the victim is uncouncious or dead or until a bystander smashes his head in with a Louisville Slugger...or a cop shoots him. I am not saying that every last one of them will go bad, I've known a few that were relativly trustworthy. Petey from the Little Rascals bears very little resemblance to today's Pit Bull. The breed has been hijacked and inbred which is very apparent in the stunted, stocky conformation that we see today. I do not hold the Bull Terrier (A very close relative) (spuds Mackenzie and General Pattons Dog)to the same opinion - you almost never ever hear of them mauling people. At least twice a week the new york papers have stories of pit bulls going on a rampage. I would never have one as a pet, sorry. Don't get me wrong..my father - a lifelong Horseman and animal lover always told me: "Never fully trust ANY animal, period." I know what he meant too, I remember my friends German Shepard was lying on the ground after being hit by a car. This was a sweet dog who never bit a soul...the kids could pull on his tail when he was eating and he would just ignore them. When an animal is under stress or injured - all bets are off. Anyway, the grandfather whose dog it was went to his buddys side to help him. Poor unsuspecting grandpa got mauled by his lifelong pet....dozens of stitches. The dog survived with a nasty limp, and went back to being sweet. Another dangerous but rare breed to watch is the Presa Canario (HUGE pit bulls - basically)they are the ones who killed Diane Whipple in San Fran. Neopolitan Mastiffs are dangerous and large and unpredictable toio. Mad Dog

Your responce about the pit bull is right on the money. They have been breed to be a weapon and not a pet or comrade. The majority of men who own these dogs use them to boost thier own ego. Maybe they only have three inches and try to make up for it by having a big mean dog. I know there are exceptions to every rule and some who are nice dogs, but I think the breed has been abused. When you see some punk with his pants around his knees and a dog with a spike collar, what does that tell you ? ITs a pet ?

These poor animals have been abused and mistreated unitll they are no longer safe for the public. We here the same stories here in MA. You never here about Poodles attacking a small child, and do'nt tell me its all the media.

I opened the NY Post yesterday after posting that

another case...pit bull takes huge chunk out of roomates leg. She had lived with the dog on great terms for almost 5 years...used to let him sleep in the bed sometimes.....then one day......Problem is...they are highly unpredictable and incredibly dangerous. All dogs can bite and I have always found poodles, chihawas, and dachsunds to be nasty little sobs....BUT they usually bite and then retreat. When I was a kid I was bitten quite a few times...mostly little sobs. But a few German Shepards and a Rottweiler once. They ran me down, knocked me down, bit me once or twice and then just stood over me, until they either got bored or the owner came. Pit Bulls as a rule will just keep going - they certainly ain't quitters! I would trust a Pit Bull around my kids slightly more than I would a weekend with Michael at Neverland. I have a higher regard for the dog. Mad Dog

    All dogs are great

Personally, after having a German Shepard, Husky, Malamute, and a few assorted mutts, I have an Akita. He's going on 10 years old, great with people, but dosen't care too much for his own. At 125#, he's quite a character. He playfully bullys my 12 year old son, and has for as long as I can remember. I guess I'm just a die-hard dog lover. I've found it's usually the owner rather than the dog that causes the problems. Dogs tend to leard what they're taught.

    I agree

They do usually match their owner's temperment. However, I will say it again. Other breeds will usually cease and desist their attack once the victim is incapacitated. The Pit Bull shows no mercy. Mad Dog

    To make myself clear

I started this thread because I love Dogs... They are nothing but pure love and are the best companions. One ofg the best parts of being in the trades is meeting the dogs :).

Sometimes I remember the dog more than the customer.

That being said Pitbulls have been mistreated for so long thier breeding has been changed. Just my opinion.

A good friend brought his shepard Boston police dog to our party on the fourth. I had NO problem letting my four year play with him. I would'nt have done that with a pitbull.

    I love my dogs

We have had Black labs for years. Gentle and intelligent and a bit goofy. I have pictures of the kids when they were little using our first dog as a pillow to watch TV from. Must agree about pit bulls. I got bit in a customers pit bill in the back yard with no warning at all. The customer was stading beside me and pulled it off immediately. It didn't bark or act menacing. I thought it was just going to jump on me and then after it jumped it bit me on the front of my leg right on the quad. Youch. I would like to have a boxer some day, and am interested in the new breed Labradoodle, a cross between a lab and a poodle. Dont have room for any more dogs at the moment since we have 3 right now. I picked him up at the pound the day before he was going to be put down. Been my best friend for 6 or 7 years now. Loves to ride in the truck and stick his head out the window, jowls flapping in the wind. Slobber flying on cars behind us..

    He picked his name, btw.

    Mutts

I would take a Mutt over a pure bred any day! My current dog is black lab/terrier mix. about 50 lbs and is the best dog I have had to date. Too sad that I have to give him up due to a divorce and apartment life.

There was an error rendering this rich post.
