    Just glancing....

through the posts. I've done alot of garages in my day, but 1900sf is Jay Leno territory for residential. If Deb wants the rest of the place as sweet as the garage, heatwise, 35K doesn't sound so out of whack to me.

One thing you are correct about Andy

You generated a lot of ill will toward yourself. Yessiree sir, that's a fact.

As for myself, I find very few things that in the long run of life, are worth getting all tied in knots over. Your posting is in the not category. It's just your opinion. The fact that I have met many of these "Wallies" face to face has proved to me that they are the real deal when it comes to happy hydronic systems. Almost all of them really know their stuff and care greatly about not only their own reputation but that of the hydronics industry as a whole. From that pride and passion for what they do comes all the vitriolic hyperbole that you are now subject to.

There are lots of Plumbers/Hydronicians that have no business in this business. There are a lot even in my small, rural area that think because they can sweat a joint they are boiler mechanics and technicians worthy of $75.00 per hour. They give our industry a bad name and make homeowners gnash their teeth in fear and loathing when they have to call one of us. Your little essay does not help that situation in the least. Kind of like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

    To Deb:

Sorry for the tangent that has been taken on your post. Most guys here really do care about your system even though they will never work on it or have anything to do with it. They simply respond because they want to see you happy and satisfied with your end result. Personally, I work with and supervise HO's on many jobs each year. Why? Because my business overhead drives the price I have to charge out of reach for a lot of people. I help make a job go any way I can because I enjoy this trade, I really like to see people happy with what wind up with and I think everyone should have a hydronic system of some kind in their home. You can't beat a well designed, properly installed hydronic system for comfort or efficiency. Pay attention to what these guys are telling you about open systems and non-barrier tube. It's the truth.

    So Andy...

If we're such a mean and dasterdly bunch of DIY haters, why would the last line of Debs post read "You guys are great"?

And, unless you've posted under another anonamous name, like maybe Alpha-Omega, I don't remember seeing your writings here before.

I've been here since the Wall opened, and I don't ever remember seeing a post where a DIYer was called anything considered disparaging...

I think you have this site confused with one of those other HVAC web sites where everyone rips everyone else on a regular basis.

Everyone here is here to help each other regardless of race, creed, sex or occupational orientation.

I challenge you to prove us wrong.

Andy makes assumptions that simply aren't true. Implying that radiant guys overcharge for thier services. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our company installs all types of HVAC we are a 1 stop shop, radiant,A/C, hot air, you name it. We don't charge anymore for radiant than we do for hot air at least mark up and per hr wise. Of course the radiant system would be more as it's much more involved. You could DIY your own baseboard hot water or DIY a hot air system and of course the labor would be much less so those would also be cheaper as well. The cost of doing buisness is a fixed exspense for us so with our company at least if you buy your own materials you wouldn't save anything. The lost revenue for material would simply be added to the labor cost. Sorry, but personally we couldn't afford to do it any other way. Learn as much as you can and find a contactor that will let you do some yourself most contractors have no problem with that at all.

Just wanted you all to know that we took your advice and have partnered with a professional for our system. He will design the system and we will buy everything from him, but my husband will do as much of the labor as possible. We know we will be paying more than we had originally planned, however, both of us feel so much better about this whole thing knowing that we have an experienced, knowledgeable professional overseeing one of the most important areas of our new home. Thanks so much for all your advice.

    A bit presumptive, methinks.
