    The Two...

... sources are air and make-up water. Air can be drawn in around pump seals etc if the system isn't layed out correctly, or oxygen can migrate in through plastic tube walls if barrier tube hasn't been used. The other biggie is fresh water being made-up because of leaks, or a relief valve that keeps popping. Fresh water contains dissolved oxgen, and the colder the water, the more oxygen it will hold.

    Oxygen is the needed ingredient

for the most common corrosion to happen. So if it is constantly being added to a closed loop system without treatment, you can count on corrosion to begin. Some oxygen will always be able to get into a system, but adding water due to a leak is bringing it in dangerous amounts without the presence of a treatment product that contains an oxygen scavenger.

If non-barrier tubing was used in will come in that way.
There are other kinds of corrosion, but oxygen induced corrision is by far the most common.

The reason that the corrosion fight must be won, is this brings on a multitude of repairs and replacements. It also results in lost system efficiency which means a fist full of dollars being wasted to heat the system.

Cleaning and treating a system in the long run, is the least expensive way to go. Prevention is always better than remediation.
