Guys, could I ask for a prayer this morning, please.

I'm about to do the hardest thing by far that I've ever done, this morning.
My Grandmother came down with lung cancer last year. She's 89 years old, so her treatment options were limited. Well, Monday evening we had to take her to the ER because she had a seizure. We found out that she also had ahd a stoke, and the cancer had spread to her brain.
This morning, the doctors have decided that the pacemaker is probably the only thing keeping her alive, so they are going to attempt to turn it off so that hopefully she can finally rest in peace (and if you could see her, you would understand why this is best).
Anyways, for those of you who are into praying, I would just like to ask for prayers of strength:
For my Mother, who is still in denial to a point of the whole situation, and will be hit the hardest.
For my brother, who handles death in a different way due to being in Desert Storm.
For my wife, who has been helping take care of Grandma, and has trying to be so strong for the rest of us.
For my 4 Daughters, especially my second, Tabatha, who will be hit extra hard as she shares a birthday with Grandma (April 24).
And most for Grandma, who is suffering tremendously, and is a former shell of herself. She's ready to be called home, and her time has come. Hopefully, we will help her get there easier.
Thanks guys, and ladies of the wall. The family appreciates any spearatual (sp?) support you can offer.

A big THANK YOU to my friends!
We just got back from the hospital, and since you guys were so kind to take time out for your prayers and thoughts, I thought I'd give you a quick update before I go to bed.
The pacemaker was turned off about 11:00 AM CDT. As of this she's still with us. Unfortunatly for her she starts and stops breathing occasionaly, she can't eat, can barely move, and we can tell she's in a lot of pain, as she occasionally moans and squirms. This is no way to go, and as far as I'm concerned, she deserves better, but it's not up to me anymore. We have now decided we will take shifts at the hospital so there is always one family member at her bedside when she finally let's go.
On top of it all, tomorrow, 3-26 is my third daughter KC's 8th birthday so we have to make time for that too. This must be the test of all tests.
Anyways, I need to get some sleep as I'm exhausted and tomorrow will be another long day.
Thanks again, EVERYONE! It helps tremendously.0 -
You don't have to explain anything, Glenn.......................
Been in your situation several times with different members of the family. If some people can't understand the decision......too bad...they usually aren't the ones who've been "on the front lines" with ya anyway. God Bless Grandma, you and your whole family. She will be with Her Maker soon, and everything will fall in to place. We'll be praying for you and yours. If you need to talk, 516 - 903-9268 anytime. Mad Dog

talk to her
Glenn,
they say that hearing is the last thing to go. You and your family can talk to her, tell her your cares and wishes and bade her on her path. I always get a shiver and tears in my eyes with this.
Sometimes people want someone with them, other times they will wait until everyone's out of the room to die.
The brithday's a challenge, but it's also an amazing message about life and love. As your grandma is going in one direction, your beautiful daughter is moving in a completely different one. Breath in the love that the world offers, and know there's enough for both.
Be gentle with your mom's denial. People take things in as they can, and denial keeps us from being crushed. I've worked with many people in grief, and the road is slow and difficult. It can also present the most powerful changes in life.
If you or others in your family need someone to call to talk about things, drop me a line and I'll make any time needed.
may we all move in peace through the world

What a difficult decision you have had to make, and yet as others have told you , be strong that you are doing whats right. You have been so Blessed to have this woman in your life. Her memory will live on with you and in your daughter.
How lucky you have been to have her with you and how she has enriched your lives.
Be strong and know that others are thinking of you and you are not alone.

Glenn - I will be certain to say a prayer for you and your family tonight and I will again on her birthday - will be easy for me to remeber - same day as my sons.
I know this is a very hard time but can I share something with you?? My Mom just passed away from cancer - February 27, 2004 @ 11:47 p.m., I was holding her hand at the time - we were in the Cleveland Clinic - we only went for tests to see if it had spread - she seemed fine. They believe that it started in her kidney and spread to her leg/knee and deterioated teh bone (which is also how we found out she had it - from the pain) spine, lungs, ribs, cranium and brain. We had to make the decision to take her off of the respirator - it was what she had wanted and made sure we all knew - no machines to make her stay alive. It is the hardest thing I have ever dealt with and am still dealing with. I have been quiet and only hinted about it in posts here and other places and deleted a lot of tear jerkers asking for support that I could not bring my self to post - this is the first time I have and there are tears on my keyboard now - I wish I would have done so earlier. I dont know what my point is - I have been numb and my thoughts unclear - was compelled to get some of it out I guess. It is hard being the baby (Mom all said I was her baby) of the family and trying to be strong for the family to come to - it has been bottled up. Sorry for treading on your thread. Also sorry for what you are dealing with - I wish you and your family lots of love to pull you through - it is a hard choice - dont let someone talk you out of it if you know it is what she wants and for the best. Unconscious with machines doing the living for you is not life. I will pray for you and your family.0 -
we send our
love from our family to yours.

Jerry...
although we've never met, I'm impressed. Having had to deal with death of close loved ones numerous times in the recent past, your words are quite comforting.
People that work with death on a daily basis are God sends...Especially in times of need.
Thanks for the calming words.

Prayers
My prayers to your family and a speedy and safe trip home for your grandmother. Gary from Granville0 -
Prayer and offering it up to God is the way to go............
My Great Uncle, Leo F. Kearns died only about 6 years ago. He was 98 1/2. The man memorized the eye charts and lied about his age to enter WW I and distinguished himself at Chaumont, where he was mustard gassed. He took almost a year to recover and lost his sense of taste and smell for 3 years. He came back to the States and piece by piece built his undertaker business into a multimillion dollar enterprise. He went thru many hard times including the loss of his beloved wife Chris. He went thru the Great Depression, The Mafia tried to muscle in on his business, unsuccessfully! He lost his 5 brothers and 1 sister although he was the second oldest. He was a Great Philanthropist and never complained. In the last few years of his life, I was priviledged to spend hours talking about his life and why he was so successful. It boiled down to these tenets: Whenever you have a seemingly insurmountable problem that you can not solve.....PUT IT IN GOD'S Hands!!!! Let him work it out for you - he always does. In business, surround yourself with loyal people, worry about skills and competency later - that can be taught. Always be direct - never sly or underhanded. Uncle Leo was never a real big drinker, but everynight he had his two Dewar's With Water, and a little simple cocktail hour - even if it were just a few peanuts. At this time, he would put the day behind him, think about the next day, and put any problems that were really troubling him in to God's Hands. Hey, it worked for him for almost a hundred years. A cherish those times I spent with Leo The Great as we called him in our family. This man was a Hero to many, but one of my personal ones. There was no finer honor than when My brother and I shouldered his American Flag-draped casket out of his favorite church for the last time. PUT IT IN GOD'S HANDS PAL, GOD WILL SEE TO IT. Mad Dog

I'm an emotional person
And at no time do emotions come closer to the surface than around death. I have done more time as a peer grief counselor, but have had numerous opportunities to sit with dying people.
I am always find myself in awe and graced by the people I have been with in these situations. I certainly receive more than I give. It has taught me the depth of people's strength and that causes me to be eternally optimisitic. What better gift can one receive?
One of these days I'll grow up and figure out what I want to be. Until then I just learn about what fasciates me, and try to share when I think I can be of use.
thanks,
jerry
