Lime........ I learn something new everyday

Can Lime in cement hurt copper pipes?

I always thought so. I never installed a copper radiant system so I never had the need to research the answer. I just assumed what I heard through the grape vine was true.

Chech out http://www.heatinghelp.com/newsletter.cfm?Id=145 for the answer.

What do they say when you assume something is true? You make an **** out of you and me.

Thanks Dan,

JR

    lime and fly ash

    either one is bad -

fly ash - (acid) eats the pipe,

    lime - (base) corodes it,

together in a perfect mix, balanced PH, (never happens of course) it would be ok

i dont trust any truck deliverd ready mixed stuff,
mix your own water block slicone QUICKREET, if you must bury metal pipe, otherwise sleave'n'seal it

if i have to run a galvinized electric pipe underground
i put it in pvc, and that inside cast iron waste line,
this ways the neither the rats nor the elements can get to it - what can i say, "murphy's got me the the short and curlies"

    Another common component

in concrete is GBFS (ground blast furnace slag) and CCB (coal combustion by products) These are the "unknowns when mixing copper and 'crete.

Type F flyash is generally Eastern coals byproducts with the higher sulfur content, which when mixed with moisture may attack copper. Type C is Western coal CCB's.

According to the director of the Redi Mix Concrete Association, from his RPA seminar several years ago.

Flyash is a good thing, finishers around here will add additional flyash to the mix for an improved finish-ability, especially in summer months. Readily available at low cost from all the coal fired power plants country wide.
