Amtrol Quad Check

Can anybody tell me how an Amtrol Quad Check operates? I was on a job where there were two of them which appeared to be manually open. I assumed that they operate in the same manner as a Taco Flowcheck but apparently they don't. After turning the knob down, there was no flow so I opened them back up and now the 2nd floor overheats.
Is there an operating range somewhere in the middle? Does the pointer on the knob have to point in a certain direction? There is no info on Amtrol's wesite, apparently no longer made.
Any help would be appreciated.

From fully closed......
turn the knob out 4 turns. That is the normal operating position. All the way down locks the wight down. Nice design, but I have had more than a couple leak through over the years.
