works really well on old copper fittings. Thanks to the person who suggested it here on The Wall.

We bought some "Heavy Hitter" from Grainger; it's pretty concentrated and pack a punch with 23% HCl (hydrochloric acid) so you've got to wear goggles and acid resistant gloves when you use it.

Didn't have to wait long,

either. It instantly cleaned this bucket of fittings we had laying around; I mean, as soon as you poured it on, they changed color.

or they won't look like that for long They seem to go black if you don't get the acid cleaned off well.

That's actually

the "before" picture; it was taken in the sunlight so they look pretty good, but the fittings were unusable.

Thanks, hr; we drained off the acid and put the fittings in a bucket of fresh water to dilute and wash them clean.

We dumped them out this morning after sitting in fresh water overnight.

The only thing that wasn't cleaned was the old flux inside some of the fittings.
